This dark book isn’t a fairy tale or romance. There is no Prince Charming, only an irredeemable villain and the object of his desire. His OBSESSION.

I felt his eyes on me everywhere I went.

I recognized his smell lingering within my home.

I even sensed his presence in my sleep.

It was too late by the time I found the monster hiding under my bed. He had wedged himself into my life, cornering me with nowhere to run.

The worst part?

The world adored him, but no one knew the devil lurking underneath the beautiful mask—no one except for me.

Manipulative, cold, and remorseless, Axel Trimalchio was a certified psychopath hiding in plain sight. He was fixated on me and would never stop chasing me.

He was determined to make me his... even though I already belonged to someone else..

*This book isn't listed in the Romance category, and Axel shouldn't be considered a hero. Check the author's content warnings before proceeding.

5000 Nights of Obsession is a book I came across on Instagram, and I thought: dark romance, Great Gatsby retelling, stalker MMC—sign me up! And I have to say, this book does it quite well. It incorporates elements of The Great Gatsby, especially in the characters. For example, Jay Ambani is a lot like Tom Buchanan (though some argue he resembles Jay Gatsby), and his wife, Piya Ambani, plays the role of Daisy. Our version of Jay, however, is Zane Trimalchio, who Piya dubs Axel the night they meet at her brother’s wedding. Zane comes from the wrong side of the tracks—he’s not wealthy, and he DJs at a venue that hosts weddings and events to make ends meet. The story opens in the present, giving us a glimpse of Piya’s (34) married life to Jay (51). They’ve been married for over 13 years and have a gifted 12-year-old daughter, Poppy. They attend a party hosted by Piya’s best friend, Jordan. Jay, who owns a hedge fund, needs to make connections, so attending these social events is part of the job. At the party, the owner of the mansion, Axel/Zane (35), can’t take his eyes off of Piya—no surprise, since he’s known her for almost 14 years. Zane isn’t letting her go again. Flashback to 14 years ago, during Piya’s brother’s wedding. Piya, feeling the pressure of her family’s expectations, has always had trouble with relationships. Her family wants her to become more “appropriate,” stop dating “losers,” and settle down. Being Indian, there are also cultural expectations regarding how she should act and dress. When Piya doesn't follow the dress code for the ceremony, her brother reprimands her, even uninviting her from the wedding. This leaves Piya feeling isolated, trying to avoid attention and looking like she crashed the wedding. But one person can’t stop staring at her: Axel. Determined to rebel, Piya creates a bucket list to get all her “rebelliousness” out of her system over the weekend, vowing to become more proper starting Monday. Axel decides to join her. The story alternates between the past and present, revealing how Jay and Piya got together and fell in love. Although it wasn’t easy, Jay is a solid character—not as selfish or arrogant as his Gatsby counterpart. He truly loves Piya and Poppy. He may be neglectful at times, but his actions are motivated by deeper reasons. Now, Axel—let me tell you, I know how toxic this can seem, but… I. DON’T. CARE. Axel is obsessed, swoony, and utterly invested in Piya. From the moment they met, he’s been focused on improving himself and his career to be worthy of her. Like Jay Gatsby, he throws elaborate parties, hoping she’ll walk through the door. He even hires Piya’s best friend, Jordan, as his publicist just to stay connected. Axel’s house faces the venue where they first met, and the green light on the dock across the lake serves as a constant reminder of his obsession (a clear Gatsby reference). He doesn’t like anyone touching her—whether it's security guards or other women and men. If anyone gets too close, he’s growling louder than a pitbull. He’s O.B.S.E.S.S.E.D. I also love the diversity in the characters. Piya and Jay are Indian, and their culture is woven throughout the book. Although I guessed the major plot twist, I still appreciated how the author built it up. Drethi reveals information gradually, keeping readers on edge. The angst in this story is exactly the kind I love. Even though I predicted the twist, I was still hooked, always wondering what would happen next. As for the spice, the book is more plot-driven than spice-driven, but the spice definitely adds to the story. There’s some noncon/dubcon (I’d call it more dubcon, though some might argue the somnophilia angle makes it noncon). Axel does break into Piya’s house while she’s sleeping, thinking her husband has returned. She believes it’s Jay, but it’s actually Axel, so the situation is murky. Also, while there’s cheating between Jay and Piya (Piya cheats on Jay), it’s never directly addressed—though there are hints that Jay might know. The spice is well-balanced, enhancing the story without overshadowing it. The ending is bittersweet: Jay becomes ill with the same disease that claimed his father’s life and eventually dies. While it wasn’t as heartbreaking as I expected (since I was rooting for Axel), it was still emotional to see Piya and Poppy there with him. Piya and Axel end up together after Piya has had time to grieve Jay’s passing. Though Piya struggled with her feelings throughout the story, she loved both her husband and Axel. Her love for Jay grew gradually, but her love for Axel was intense and explosive—the kind of fireworks people associate with true love. The audiobook was well-narrated, and the characters’ voices suited them perfectly. There’s no epilogue, but none is needed. The story ends with a HEA/HFN for Piya and Axel. I’ll definitely be reading Poppy’s book next.

3.5 stars Considering I did not like the source material, I had a decent time with this. Make sure you check the authors warning because some of these characters are not romance worthy AT ALL. I totally understood Axel and his willingness to do whatever he had to do to get what he was owed. Piya on the other hand didn't do it for me character wise.

Drethi Anis delivers a gripping, obsessive love story with Axel Trimalchio, a relentless antihero whose fixation on Piya knows no bounds. This isn’t a fairy tale, it's a psychological rollercoaster filled with manipulation, intensity, and a dangerously deep devotion. The *Great Gatsby*-inspired plot is dark, layered, and impossible to put down. Elena Wolfe and Sebastian York bring Axel and Piya’s tumultuous journey to life, heightening the tension and raw emotion. Their performances add depth, making Axel’s obsession and Piya’s struggle even more immersive. The slow-burn suspense, heavy emotions, and morally gray characters kept me hooked. Not for the faint of heart, check the content warnings, but if you love dark romance, this one is unforgettable.
