some authorial choices stuck and haven't aged well eg. a young Scottish clansmen is sent to the indies to run a sugar plantation, marries the blond and blue eyed daughter of another plantation owner and lives happily ever after. no mention of slavery and working conditions, yet the heroine is very sensitive to suffering in England and Scotland. (scots owning and running sugar plantations is historically accurate, and i guess also historically accurate that the aristocracy would not care to know, and yet the heroine has strong morals and doesn't seem like the sort of person that would ignore suffering because of skin colour.

things i did like: heroine is deeply attracted to the hero but doesn't want to get married or have an affair and sticks to her guns, calls out his shady behaviour and he apologises then proceeds to treat her concerns with respect. conflict in the romance is external and there is no miscommunication or misunderstanding, she wants peace and prosperity for everyone and that comes under Hanover rule. he is Scottish and wants Scottish rule and independence. acknowledgment that war is not glorious for anyone but a tragedy for everyone.

the romance gets a bit overshadowed by war plot but there are some lovely bits - his first courting gift is a book she loves and he understands she would want to read it right away so he doesn't interrupt for 2 hours 😂
