Summary

Liam Kelly is in love with his best friend. His straight, freshly divorced best friend, who wants to experiment…with him.

Ollie: The last thing I expected from my wife was a divorce. I’d checked all the boxes off—cozy house near my folks, joined the family business as a contractor, and married right out of high school. Except the more I think about how distant we’ve been, the more our split makes sense. And the more time I spend blowing off steam with my best friend, the more I want to actually...blow him.

Liam: Have I been hopelessly in love with Ollie my entire life? Yes, yes, I have. Has he been married for the past decade? Yes, yes, he has. However, when his wife calls it quits, my heart can’t help contriving scenarios where he might not be as straight as he seems. And when those scenarios start coming true—from scorching looks to playful grapples until we go much further—I throw myself into the deep end.

The second we start hooking up, I can’t hold back the feelings I’ve been clutching tight to for over a decade. But if this ends up a rebound for Ollie, a blip before he looks for a new wife, I won’t only be out a best friend, but the love of my life.

Reread as audiobook. Really enjoyable and well fitting narration.
Story - 4.5 stars. Definitely one of the best best friends to more, including clueless to bi-awakening that I've read. Ollie's complete loyalty to Josie while they were together was really a very appealing character trait, and his lack of concern about realising he felt more for Liam after they decided on divorcing was charming. The next spin-off series with more of the Brannon family sounds great.

Ollie and Liam's best friends to lovers romance was a delight to listen to. I've long been a fan of this trope, especially when one of the best friends has been pining for years, and this book hit on all of the attributes I find irresistible. The catalyst for Ollie wanting to experiment was his divorce, but despite the emotional upheaval he should have been feeling, he was pretty even-keeled about the whole thing. I completely understand why Liam was scared to get his hopes up, because it's not every day that the man you've been in love with for years suddenly wants to jump into a physical relationship with no holds barred. As the two of them explored their chemistry, it was impossible not to fall head over heels and delight in their compatibility. The two of them definitely moved fast, but because they'd been friends for most of their lives they had a strong foundation to build upon that made me believe in the connection between them. Liam and Ollie did fall into a couple of miscommunication traps throughout the book, and they had to confront one of Liam's biggest insecurities of being a dirty secret that his best friend wanted to hide from everyone else. I thought the angst to sweetness ratio was nicely balanced, and I was glad to see the two of them work through their hiccups together and come out on the other side stronger.

This was okay. The usual gay friend in love with straight best friend, who is married. I found it a little ridiculous that the straight friend comes and tells his friend that his wife is divorcing him and the next morning the straight friend realises he's so into the gay friend. The authors writing style was actually to my liking though. Narrator was fine enough.

It was alright

Joint Penetration concludes the Hot Under the Collar series with a best friends to lovers story that is angst-free and offers an almost cheesy romance.
Liam and Ollie have been friends for ages, with Liam having a crush on Ollie for a very long time without him realizing it. I really liked both characters from the beginning, they are both very likeable and lovable protagonists. The story was wonderfully told and as a reader you learn so much of the background story that you can really understand the depth of their friendship.
It was fun to read this story. Liam absolutely deserves to be loved and the author made the transition from friendship to lovers very well - it was loose and easy. I can forgive Ollie for taking so long to realize what was going on because of his lovable nature. The family and friends also really brought the book to life and guys, look forward to seeing familiar characters again.

Dan Levy narrated the audiobook and he was a new narrator for me. I thought he delivered a strong performance. It was a pleasure to listen to his pleasant voice, which always found the right intonations. His performance was entertaining and lively.

One MC married and straight (getting divorced)

Firstly, I don't get the title of this story. It had zero relevance.

This book can be read as a standalone. There are alot of side characters that I'm guessing were from the previous books but I didn't feel like I needed to read them to follow this story.

I really enjoyed both of the MCs. They had amazing chemistry. They were both pretty clueless that they had always treated each other like they were already in love and it was no shock to anyone and I really love that. They had a really solid foundation and were super sweet together.

The story was really low angst and tons of steam. I enjoyed the overall plot from start to finish, I just wish it was longer. They went from zero to 100% in in no time at all. Even with their solid friendship foundation I feel like the relationship development could have been explored more realistically. Especially with the one MC discovering a whole new gender sexual attention and so close after losing his wife. It just wasn't realistic. That was my only complaint and still had to rate it really high because the story was sweet and sexy and I loved it.

I'm the odd one out by thinking the narration was just ok. The narrator had a pleasant reading voice and kept a good pace. I did speed it up to 1.40x though. He expressed the emotions decent enough. Unfortunately I did not notice any distinction in tone between the characters. I had to go back and few times in order to follow the story. It was a pleasant enough listen but it could have been way better.

Sweet and steamy best friends story
