About this listen

With an empty nest and divorce in hand, Rona decides it's time to explore the fantasies that nourished her through a long, tedious marriage to a man whose idea of outrageous sex was leaving the lights on. At the top of her fantasy list is touring Dark Haven, the BDSM club, but she isn't prepared for the effect of a powerful Dom. When Master Simon takes control and introduces her to toys and sensations she's never felt before, she realizes he could fulfil every fantasy on her list all by himself. But she's vowed to never get trapped in a relationship again.

One of the most popular Doms in Dark Haven, Master Simon has had his fill of eager, shallow, young subs. Rona is older, intelligent, independent, and sweetly submissive. After an evening of intense pleasure and despite her obvious attraction, she refuses to see him again. He needs a way to change her mind. She's not the first sub he's taken on a journey of exploration, but he's beginning to think she might be the last.

I can not get enough of Cherise Sinclair's audio books. The narrator's bring the books alive even more and I am enjoying many hours reliving these amazing stories. I love the Dark Haven series. It was great to hear Master Simon and Rona's story as always with Cherise's stories it was filled with intimate BDSM scenes and moments that have you amused at the reactions of the characters. I'm certainly going to be listening to this book over and over again.

Another great audio book!

Such a great book. I just wish it was longer...I could listen to Wen being dominant all day and all night. Kai really is so talented with her performance. Such depth to the storyline. Very well written. Also a mention of my favourite band, Hollywood Undead!! Extra brownie points for great taste!!

Absolutely brilliant

Really like Cherise and her bdsm-series and this one is a good one. The couple is a bit older than usual and I liked that. Sweet sexy and emotional.

What a nice book!!

Fairly obviously, for an audiobook so short, the "story" is minimal. Woman who's recently become unattached after 20 years of a very boring marriage, decides she wants to explore relationships with lots of other men but not get involved until she decides she's ready. Master Simon decides she's his but just doesn't know it yet. During only her 2nd experience of a gathering of BDSM enthusiasts, he manages to persuade her to accept him as her "master".

In areas of performance and detail this is poor, verging on abysmal. "Oh, Master Simon, he's so hot" we're breathlessly told by an unnamed sub. Well, actually he isn't unless you like your "master" to sound as though he's reciting his lines of dialogue the way he would when reading his shopping list to check he hasn't forgotten something. He (or rather, Ms Sinclair) has actually forgotten quite a lot, including those explicit descriptions of objects which make the "scenes" sound more voluptuous - a gold fob watch on an intricate heavy chain instead of a kitchen timer ("eggs over-easy or over-hard" - how unsexy is that?); an alcove partially curtained in thick red velvet, caught back by soft ropes of tasslelled gold braid rather than a cubby hole under the stairs (I really hope he's moved the vacuum cleaner and sweeping brush before his guests arrive); a glowing log fire in the master bedroom, sending warm and mysterious shadows flitting around the walls, rather than a gas one (has he made sure he's put enough credit on the meter?). You'll pick your own favourites but there are so many ways in which Ms Sinclair could have added detail to enhance the tale but didn't. It's lazy writing, even for a short book.

It's also odd narration because the male voice-actor sounds like a real person when narrating inner monologue or details of any action. That's a pity because he has a beautifully rounded baritone voice which should sound sexy throughout but doesn't. The female voicehactor does a much better job of presenting both actual dialogue and details of thoughts or action too. She has a beautiful alto voice with none of the overt and overused breathiness we often hear in recordings of this genre. Though she never drops the octave that Simon predicts she will after climaxing, she's very pleasant to listen to throughout, putting me in mind of warm caramel or the scent of ylang-ylang.

The idea of the 3 minute "mini scenes" which Simon thinks will give his "pet" time to decide whether she really does want to have it away with lots of men or just him is risible. This isn't speed dating "lad" and, even if it were, those 3 minutes only form the first visit to the store to see what's in stock, not his "lass's first selection. I know this is a short listen but it "must try harder" to make action at least remotely possible. I'd have been shouting both Houston and red as soon as that "no real option" scene became clear. For a book which serves as a pretty good initial view of equipment, it's seriously poor at demonstrating the real basis for BDSM relationships. Though Simon reminds himself that the choice lies with the sub, his actions belie that and the alternative (that the dom decides who they want and that the sub has no option but to accept) is a dangerous view to put before an audience. Simon even goes as far as demanding.that his new "pet" call him "master" before she's any real understanding of what that entails.

One more little thing that irritated me to bits is the oversuse or misuse of particular words or phrases. If I ever hear anyone use the term "oh Crum(b?) as a swear word, I might be sorely tempted to whack them round the face with a wet fish until they find a new one. The word "lass" every five or six words of Simon's dialogue drove me to annoyed distraction and if he'd used that so frequently when I was in hearing distance, I'd have been sneering at him for his abuse of the English language. Finally, Glaswegian grandfathers don't call their granddaughters "pet", they call them "hen", "brammer"; "braw or bonnie lass". "Pet" (as a term of endearment rather than of BDSM "play") is far more likely to be used by Geordies.. Do your research properly Ms Sinclair!

Overall, if you're looking for something which will introduce you to equipment and some of its' uses, this isn't too bad. If you want a more realistic introduction to the basis for BDSM relationships, forget it. If you want mechanical but reasonably graphic descriptions of sex, particularly from the subs point of view, this is OK (at best). If you want to listen to something which will raise your blood pressure, bring you out in a hot sweat, make your extremities sing and send you the bed in strung out readiness for filthy dreams, try a different audio.
