Dr Ruben Verwaal is a historian, curator, and an expert of matters sanguinary. His latest book is Blood, Sweat and Tears: A History of Bodily Fluids, which investigates the historical traces left by all fluids that regularly flow from the body. The book was originally published in Dutch and is translated into English by Andy Brown.
Ruben is also the author of Bodily Fluids, Chemistry and Medicine in the Eighteenth-Century Boerhaave School. In the process of his historical research, Ruben conducted historical experiments with blood, urine, and breastmilk to better grasp people’s very different perceptions of the fluids. No babies were hurt in performing such experiments; the breast milk consisted of donated left-overs of pumped milk no longer fit for consumption.
A popular public speaker in the Netherlands, Belgium, and UK, Ruben has been a guest on TV, radio, and podcast shows. Ruben is honorary research fellow at the Institute for Medical Humanities, Durham, and curator of medical collections at the Erasmus University Medical Centre, Rotterdam. His favourite heritage object is the salivary stone pulveriser.
