เรื่องราวของพระเจ้าสายน้ำผึ้งกับพระนางสร้อยดอกหมากนั้น มีกล่าวไว้ในพงศาวดารเหนือ ฟังดูเหมือนเรื่องเลื่อนลอย แต่นักประวัติศาสตร์และนักโบราณคดีได้ค้นคว้าแล้วปรากฏว่า พระเจ้าสายน้ำผึ้งนั้นมีตัวจริง เคยเป็นกษัตริย์ซึ่งครองเมืองเก่าที่ตั้งอยู่ที่หนองโสน ก่อนที่พระเจ้าอู่ทองจะสร้างกรุงศรีอยุธยา และเป็นผู้สร้างวัดสำคัญ คือ "วัดพนัญเชิง" และ "วัดมงคลบพิตร" ซึ่งยังปรากฏอยู่ในปัจจุบัน
