『カラマーゾフの兄弟』は、1879年に文芸雑誌『ロシア報知』に連載が開始され、翌1880年に単行本として出版された。『罪と罰』と並ぶドストエフスキーの最高傑作とされ、『白痴』、『悪霊』、『未成年』と併せ後期五大作品と呼ばれる。
強欲かつ好色な成り上がり地主フョードル・カラマーゾフは、直情的な長男のドミートリイとそりが合わず、遺産相続や、グルーシェンカという女の奪い合いで、いがみ合っていた。ある日、三男の修道僧アレクセイの師、高僧ゾシマの仲介で、ばらばらに育ったカラマーゾフの兄弟3人が一堂に会すこととなった。しかし、顔を合わせると――。
