Summary
梅崎春夫が海軍経験をもとに執筆。戦後文学の代表作となった作品。
かつて教材にもなり、ドラマ化もされた。太平洋戦争末期、アメリカ軍の本土上陸に備え桜島の海軍基地に勤務する「私」は死を覚悟していた。
どうせここで皆死ぬんだという絶望か蔓延する中、「私」は死ぬなら美しく死にたいと思っていた。しかし、その運命に納得のできない自分もまたいる。
今まで死んでいった仲間たちのことを思い出すと、美しい滅びなどあるのだろうか、とも思う。
やがて、玉音放送により終戦が告げられたのだった…
