冬の日暮。いいようのない疲労と倦怠とが身を包む中、横須賀発の上り、二等客車に乗り込む。
発車の笛が鳴り、かすかに心のくつろぎを感じたとき、けたたましい音を立てて１３、４の小娘が客車に入ってきた。
身なりの不潔さ、下品な顔立ち、３等の切符を握りしめて２等に乗り込んでくる愚鈍な彼女にいらつきながらも、汽車は進んでいく。
