一高の学生、間（はざま）貫一はお宮と許婚であったが、銀行家の御曹司に見初められた彼女は親によって無理やり別れさせられてしまう。貫一は復讐のため高利貸しとなるが、お宮も幸せに暮らせずにいた。会話を口語体にしながら、地の文は文語文という雅俗折衷の文体が好評を博し、紅葉を流行作家とした一作。
