A Child's Garden of Verses is a children’s poetry work by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, containing poems with themes of childhood, illness, play, and solitude. The book first appeared in 1885 under the title Penny Whistles and has been reprinted frequently, often in illustrated versions. Stevenson recounts the joys of childhood in sailboats on a river, the arrival of the lamplighter, and dreams of sailing away to foreign lands. Well-loved titles among the 66 poems are "Foreign Children", "The Lamplighter", "The Land of Counterpane", "Bed in Summer", "My Shadow", and "The Swing". In 1922, a Latin translation of the poems was published by Terrot Reaveley Glover, and more recently the Italian composer Carlo Deri recorded “The Unseen Playmate”, while the Lithuanian composer Giedrius Alkauskas released “A Child's Garden of Songs” as a six-song cycle.
