About this listen

Audible Studios presents a brand new recording of Charles Dickens' timeless seasonal story A Christmas Carol, performed by Hugh Grant.

First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially.

One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

I wasn't sure what to expect but Hugh Grant's narration was simply wonderful. His soft but fully-invested performance made me feel like a kid being read his favourite story by his favourite uncle.

beautifully narrated by Hugh

I have read, watched and listened to 'A Christmas Carol' so many times, but Hugh Grant' s reading brought out details that I had previously missed, highlighting the humour in the text without overdoing it.

Excellent Reading

This is a joy. Beautifully read by Hugh Grant, he avoids overstatement and reads with a quiet but powerful dignity, perfectly capturing the character notes and Dickensian brio and wit in this transcendent tale of redemption.
There are no intrusive overproduction sound effects or musical cues, apart from a brief festive musical theme at open and close, and it's all the better for that, relying instead on the power of the narration.
I devoured this in two separate listens. I suffer from insomnia, and it made my unwanted wakeful hours feel festive and light. Highly recommended.
