December 1860. Headed for the morning shift at the Swindon Locomotive Works is an army of men pouring out of terraced houses built by the GWR, a miniature town and planned community that aims to provide for its employees from cradle to grave. Unfortunately, boilersmith Frank Rodman is headed for the grave sooner than he'd expected, or he will be once his missing head is found.

Colbeck, the Railway Detective, finds his investigation into Rodman's murder mired in contradictions. Was the victim a short-tempered brawler or a committed Christian and chorister? On the trail of Rodman's enemy as the season starts to bite, Colbeck finds little festive cheer in the twists and turns of this peculiar case.

brilliantly read and an enjoyable story with all the right atmosphere , twists and turns

This was was first listen and read of an Edward Marston mystery. It will not be the last. The author clearly knows the advantages of rapid switching between scenes; this has the benefit of quickening the pace or seeming to. The detective Colbeck and Leeming work as a pairing very well. Though this mystery is set around Christmas time it does not have the degree of Christmas that some might hope for. This novel is interesting for the late interweaving of a second case which is an interesting way of linking some characters and perhaps setting the ground for future development. As a Listen this novel keeps the interest. My challenge will be to decide which of Edward Marston's many audio books I follow on with. Gordon Griffin's performance is more than competent, though perhaps without the range of character voices distinct to this novel this listener had hoped for. Sadly, voices from other performances, notably in the Chaloner series populate this performance. All said this is an audio-book that will please many. Give it a try.

A most enjoyable book I look forward to catching up with the detective again soon I would recommend this audio book it was a great listen Edward Marston is a good story teller and the endings are not what you expect

The story is very intriguing and most of the descriptions of the railway and works are accurate.
However the houses were not red brick, but a sandy colour - material s from local quarries apparently.

I lived in the railway village and know it very well, but in the 1950s.
