About this listen

When a redundant church is bought by a young pagan couple, the local fundamentalist minister reacts with fury. In an isolated community on the Welsh border, a modern witch hunt begins. Diocesan Exorcist Merrily Watkins is expected to keep the lid on the cauldron ... but what she finds out will seriously test her beliefs.

Also, there's the problem of the country solicitor who won't be parted from his dead wife. The mystery of five ancient churches all dedicated to St Michael, slayer of dragons.

And a killer with an old tradition to guard ...

Critic reviews

"Ancient history, violent deaths, feuds, intrigues and murder. A most original sleuth." (The Times)

"Few writers blend the ancient and supernatural with the modern and criminal better than Rickman." (Guardian)

"Compassionate, original and sharply contemporary, Rickman's crime series is one of the best around." (The Spectator)

i like Phil Rickman books but was disappointed to see the same narrator. Generally the narration was good - except for the mens'voices, particularly the character of Gomer. Their voices were so quiet I had to turn up the volume to hear them and sometimes, if accented, were still hard to understand. Such a shame as, particularly with Gomer's character, you need to hear what they are saying for the plot.

it would gave been better not to changevthe voices for each character.

OK storyline, didn't enjoy it as much as the first two, mainly because of the male voices being so much quieter meaning I had to increase the volume only then to have the female voices shouting at me.

narration spoilt this

Struggled to get 3/4 way through and gave up, poor story line and very disjointed
