Summary

She used to be the sidekick. Now she might be the only one who can survive.

As teens, Harlow Drake and Lainey Piper built an online fandom solving small-town crimes. Harlow was the star, Lainey the behind-the-scenes genius (and often, Harlow’s scapegoat). Years later, Harlow’s hosting a hit true crime tv show. Lainey? She’s working in forensics. Well, forensic accounting . . . from home. In pajamas. With her cat.

But when Harlow faces significant backlash over fumbling a case, she needs a quick win—like a special investigation into the decades-old disappearance of a starlet from a once-glamorous, now decrepit island hotel. The catch? It’s bankrolled by Deke and Bryce of DBag Games, who are looking to shed their “frat bro” reputations. As long-time fans, they have one requirement for their funding: Lainey has to play the sidekick again.

Lainey is wary, but the offer is a lifeline in a sea of unpaid student loans. After reaching the Crossings Hotel, she realizes she’s not content to be Harlow’s helper anymore. As the cold case heats up, a crew member falls over dead, presenting Harlow and Lainey with a more modern mystery: what secrets does this hotel hide within its walls?

With sabotage, hidden staircases, and a killer in their midst, Lainey steps into the spotlight and takes charge of the investigation. It’s up to her to crack the case—as long as she can stay alive.

Definitely a background audiobook, honestly the story only got going in the last 3hrs and by then I didn’t really care much. Love the narrator she did a great job with a very average book. Disappointed.

Boring!! Took ages for the story to get going, and when it finally did I’d lost interest.

This has an unusual start, which then just tail spins as you get sucked into her life. Being on her own, in a show where she knows she is being used, and by an ungrateful school friend and constantly out in her place. You wonder why she is putting up with it. Until she starts to realise that the other members of the crew all feel the same and start to lookout for each other. With light hearted moments this was a very good listen with Amanda Ronconi doing an excellent job of narration.

I’ve a couple of other audiobooks by this author and I love Amanda Ronconi as a narrator who does another great job here but the material she’s working with isn’t great. You’d think the ingredients of a ‘murder’ island with a rag-tag mish-mash of guests investigating a 1920’s unexplained disappearance would produce something more gripping but I couldn’t care less about any of the characters. They are so thinly sketched that the reader is given nothing to sink their teeth into. More care is taken to flesh out the main character ‘Lainey’ but there’s nothing to make you care about her. You can’t lose yourself in the richness of the writing as it’s thinner than tissue paper. It feels like the writer is following an old formula that’s worked for her before but it’s time for a change. I stayed listening until the end so I could give a fair review. I’m mostly giving the 3 stars for the narrator as she’s wonderful but I won’t be buying any more books by this author.

Excellent Narrator. The story isn’t.
