Summary

A gripping standalone thriller from the Sunday Times No.1 bestselling author of the Logan McRae series.

Beware of the dark…

Welcome to the Misfit Mob – where Police Scotland dumps the officers it can’t get rid of, but wants to. Officers like DC Callum MacGregor, lumbered with all the boring go-nowhere cases. So when an ancient mummy is found at the Oldcastle tip, it’s his job to track down its owner.

But then Callum uncovers links between his mummified corpse and three missing young men, and life starts to get a lot more interesting.

No one expects the Misfit Mob to solve anything, but right now they’re all that stands between a killer’s victims and a slow lingering death. Can they prove everyone wrong before someone else dies?

I loved this book, I loved the plot, I loved the characters, I loved the narration, I really appreciated that it was so long, I did not want it to finish.

Steve Worsley's performance was brilliant as always.

If you like the Logan McRae stories, I reckon you'll love this, unless you're a stickler for realism, then perhaps it's one to give a miss, if, like myself, you love it when fiction is, for once, stranger than truth, then give it go.

Absolutely amazing

Ok, I found the central character a little too like Logan Macrae from the authors other novels, and the quantity of (smoked) red herrings cast about the place to be a bit much, but other than that, this is utterly enjoyable.

Although the cast of characters are drawn in only bold lines for the most part, they are still distinctive and put to good use. The plot is nice and twisty, and when you guess ahead of reveals it's not annoying. The 'procedural' elements of the plot move everything along nicely, while the real entertainment comes from the dialogue.

Classic MacBride, I hope he keeps them coming.

Dark, witty, nasty, and entertaining.

one of the best plots I've listened to this year. I did recapp a couple of chapters as there is so much going on. The reveal at the end is class

classic MacBride with the usual strong characters and many dark twists and turns. Would like to hear of the protagonists again.
