About this listen

A gripping standalone thriller from the Sunday Times No.1 bestselling author of the Logan McRae series.

Beware of the dark…

Welcome to the Misfit Mob – where Police Scotland dumps the officers it can’t get rid of, but wants to. Officers like DC Callum MacGregor, lumbered with all the boring go-nowhere cases. So when an ancient mummy is found at the Oldcastle tip, it’s his job to track down its owner.

But then Callum uncovers links between his mummified corpse and three missing young men, and life starts to get a lot more interesting.

No one expects the Misfit Mob to solve anything, but right now they’re all that stands between a killer’s victims and a slow lingering death. Can they prove everyone wrong before someone else dies?

Where does A Dark So Deadly rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The length of the book really gave the story some authenticity. Lots of other crime novels that I've read in the past aren't long enough to allow the characters to develop into fully fledged people within a plausible story.

What other book might you compare A Dark So Deadly to, and why?

Any title by RD Wingfield, as the style is somewhat reminiscent of Frost.

Have you listened to any of Steve Worsley’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Given the long length of the book and the awkward things that MacBride made him do, like rapping, I highly rate his versatility.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

At over 20 hours? This book took me a week, so all in one sitting is ludicrous.

Long book, worth reading

Some nice twists subtly flagged in advance and I love Willow. Found myself avoiding usual irritation by ticking off the usual references as if a game, you know, heroic male cop/female tech power relationship presented as ‘nice’ /walkover/soft touch with women; suspension for doing good /referred to professional standards; female as sexual object; someone taking holiday in Lossiemouth; whisky drinking/drunkenness; fish suppers; rose bay willow herb as the only plant that seems to grow in MacBride’s Scotland, and so on...
Still, I’m off to find my next MacBride title and will no doubt need to play the checklist game again.

In some ways better than Logan McRae books

Although rather long at 20 hours this is a great listen. The characters and the relationships between them are great. It made me laugh throughout as the dialogue is really funny. The story is also good but secondary to the characters. This one is well worth listening to.

Excellent and unexpected

Good story but got a bit tricky to follow towards the end of the book. I like the authors style of writing.
