Summary

Professional declutterer Ellen Curtis doesn't do house clearances. So when Tamara Nicklin, owner of a local gastropub, asks Ellen to clear her late father's house, she's not interested... even when Tamara admits that the real reason she wants to hire Ellen is to find his missing will. Then Ellen discovers Tamara's husband has plans for the house. Plans Tamara doesn't know about. And it's clear to Ellen that this is the right job for her, after all. Ellen dives in, and what she finds in the dead man's house soon makes her wonder if Tamara's father really fell down the stairs, or if he was pushed. Can she sort through the secrets and lies to find not just the missing will – but the truth?

Didn’t want it to end, really care about the characters and want to know more.

Character development

This series is quite sad and depressing to listen to. I'm always waiting for the fun and humour to come but it's not that kind of Simon Brett story. Ellen's family problems will be close to many of us of a similar age so I'm not finding much escapism. Nevertheless, it's read beautifully, if slightly melancholic, by the author himself. And I'm now off to listen to an early Mrs Parteger for some light relief!

Melancholic

No matter what the subject matter, Simon Brett never disappoints. As I listened to another rendition of this series, I tried to analyse what makes these books he writes so enjoyable. It’s partly because he reads his own writings to us. That is so special when you listen to a lot of different audiobooks. Not only does he write the book but he also invests the time and energy to record it for us. Thank you!

The way he develops the characters and brings them to life is so relevant and at times humorous but equally show such insight and understanding. Difficult aspects of the lives of the characters are handled sensitively and truthfully.

The storylines always keep you hooked to the very end, making you want to listen in one sitting to the very last chapter. Just wish these books were longer! Looking forward to the next one!

Another great listen…

Loved the expression in the reading, bringing his characters to life. I just have to keep reminding myself that he is she!
Good rounded characters, interesting storylines and beautiful language and diction.

Waiting for book 6!

Usually love this series but this one was a bit boring for me. I don’t enjoy that all the characters sound the same and have the exact same speech patterns/language, makes it very unrealistic for all of them to speak as though they are a middle aged educated woman

Good but dry
