About this listen

He’s a courageous man.... But can he rescue himself?

Firefighter Leon Rothchild had endured his share of grief. Still, honor compelled him to look after his late friend’s ex-wife and daughter. Though it was obvious the lovely Misty Brightwater could take care of herself, she welcomed Leon into her three-year-old’s life. Their family was a marvelous glimpse into the warmth of the one he’d lost and desperately missed. And perhaps it was the push he needed to risk everything again....

A brilliant story with strong characters, and I really wanted to love it. Unfortunately, I never quite felt a connection to the characters and found I could easily leave the book for days without feeling like I was missing anything.

The dialogue is good, but the writing lacks enough descriptive detail to help the reader visualise the settings, facial expressions, and the characters’ emotions, or how the dialogue is received. Because of this, it’s difficult to form an emotional connection with the characters or fully understand how their relationships develop.

As a result, the climax ends up feeling a little flat, which is disappointing given the strong premise.

Compelling Idea, Missing the Emotional Pull
