On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol.

Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval.

Can a life without luxury be the richest of all?

Really enjoyable and somewhat unusual story of a Russian aristocrat sentenced to house arrest in the Hotel Metropole in Moscow, having narrowly escaped execution after the revolution. However, this book doesn't give its pleasures away easily. It's written with technical precision and sometimes early on seemed like an exercise in lexicography rather than a flowing tale. I'm not sure if I would have had the patience with the regular book, that a few long drives allowed me to get drawn into the audio book. But I'm glad I did. Ultimately though, the characters emerge deeply, and the observations underpin a story which spins well beyond the confines of the Metropole. Narration is precise and a great fit for the style of the book.

Rewarding if you're patient with it.

Really enjoyed the story and narration, probably the best audiobook I have had the pleasure of listening to.

I’m actually quite sad it’s finished, I will miss the Count and his friends.

Highly recommended!!!

Wonderful in every way.

The story of A Gentleman in Moscow is a true delight and a wonderful discovery. It was however surprising, and mildly irritating to hear so many misprounced words.

Wonderful story, with surprising lapses in narration

SPOILERS *** Easily one of the most humorous books I've read in recent years, there is a jollity to The Count, in spite of his circumstances that makes you warm to him instantly.

The self assured nonchalance that would be an ugly jacket on anyone else is such a charming aspect of Alexanders nature. Perhaps both a trait of his class and a representation of the time?

When the story begins The Count has no remaining family to speak of, and after a kangaroo court hearing he is relieved of his status as Master of the hunt, recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, and most importantly, member of the jockey club!

With an adopted family including a chef, an actress, maitre d, seamstress and a little girl whom all have such a devotion to him, Rostov is gifted perhaps the richest life of his many comrades.

Add to this a varied cast of bits parts, all with a hand to play and a backdrop as grandiose and stunning as the Metropol Hotel and you're gaurenteed a superb adventure.

Hats off to Nicholas Guy Smith for his narration. I felt like I was sat opposite The Count at The Boyarsky listening to him retell me his tale.

Amor Towles has created a masterpiece. Count Rostov is a character who has every reason to be bitter about his change in circumstance following his change in fortune after being placed on house arrest in Moscow during the revolution and yet he adapts to his new situation without complaint.

The novel unfolds revealing nuggets of wisdom, and little known but charming facts along the way.

A beautiful novel with outstanding narration.

Second time I’ve listened to this. One of my all time favourites.
