A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov was published in 1840. Set in the Russian Caucasus in the 1830s, the novel relates a series of adventures by the military officer Pechorin during his travels in the Caucasus. He kidnaps the daughter of a Circassian tribesman, becomes entangled with a group of smugglers, and tries to win the affection of a Muscovite princess while having on an affair with his former lover Vera. Pechorin is a nihilist whose melancholy goes hand in hand with a constant cynicism and sense of boredom. The novel was hailed by great Russian writers like Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov.

as ever, nobody was listening to the recording before issuing it to the public. Full of gross mispronunciations, which are not the reader's fault because English is not her first language. she even clears her throat once or twice and rereads a passage assuming the less good reading will be edited out. but no, no one checked it first. i am sorry for the reader who did her best but appalled at the production standards of Audible on the less mainstream classic works.

an amazing book poorly read
