I adore this series of history books and particularly this narrator (Timothy West). If you need a comprehensive overview of British history then look no further,Schama has done a cracking job which contains different aspects to his TV adaptation. Start with Volume 1 and sit back and learn as much as any college degree

The only bad thing about it is that there is no gap between sections and chapters, the narrations starts immediately.

As well, the chapters could be titled, and the sections too.

Great stuff, but there is no gap between sections

I loved the first volume. I’m struggling with this one because of a very poor narration which makes it quite difficult to follow. The narrator swallows the end of many sentences. A pity.

Let down by poor narration

I felt as if a door had opened. The account of British History told here is so much more than the dry inaccurate version I was taught. In my schooldays Cromwell was almost a blip. We barely touched on India and the Raj. I have enjoyed Timothy West’s mellifluous tone and am grateful to Simon Schama for such a well presented account.

A well written well narrated account
