About this listen

Dean and Jess knew the house had a tragic past but it did not stop them from making the move with their young daughters. It was supposed to be a new - and bigger - home with which they could continue to build upon their already established happy memories but as the house's past begins to haunt them they realize it is not the dream they first hoped it to be.

From Matt Shaw (author of The Cabin, Happy Ever After and Sick B*stards) comes a new novella; a tale of psychological horror and slow-building tension leading to an unforgettable climax.

What disappointed you about A House in the Country?

Can appreciate there are short stories but this just didn't have enough time or quality to go anywhere - got to the end and just thought 'so what'?!! :-/

Has A House in the Country put you off other books in this genre?

Not at all! BUT wouldn't be tempted to read any more of author's books!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Pseudo-creepy , condescending voice! Nearly gave up a couple times but hoped the story would be a good one - but being as it wasn't, feel let down and cheated on that book.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It had the potential to be BETTER that's the sad and unfortunate thing!

Any additional comments?

No,

What a let-down!

Well, what is to be said about this book? I’ll start with the positives. At least it wasn’t full of he said she said but still, it did have a lot of repitition in it. The plot was well, predictable and also contradictory. A man meant to die in his sleep is butchered to death instead. It resembled or at least was meant to resemble I think ‘The Amitybille Horror’ and boy did it do a poor job of that. Naration was poor verging on utterly boring. Was he real or a robot? I’m still trying to make up my mind. Oh, one more positive. It was short.

well, that’s two hours of my life I won’t get back.

I found the narrator carries a rather condescending / patronising tone throughout the story. Unfortunate really.

Rather condescending narrator

The narrator totally ruined this for me he has a dull tone and tempo to his voice. I switched off and missed most of it. The first Matt shaw books I listened to were the sick Bastards trio with Chris Barnes as narrator and that is a match made in heaven/hell however you look at it then Julian seager started to show up he is ok and now this guy. Matt shaw if you have any control over who reads your books on here then get Chris Barnes back soon.

Totally wrong narrator

Would you consider the audio edition of A House in the Country to be better than the print version?

I have only listerned to the audio but I would buy the print version.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A House in the Country?

I loved the twists in the story but I loved the ending.

What about Wayne Farrell’s performance did you like?

This is the first Wayne Farrell audio I have listered to and I really enjoyed it.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I made me think. Never dismiss your children as most things they say or see is the truth.

Great Thriller
