It's all right. I can't say more than that about this book. frustrating as well. It's a conversation you might have with a silly old woman while sitting on the front porch on a sunny afternoon with the dust flying and the warm wind moving the dry grass. You might have it between lunch time and evening when the crickets come out. It's gossippy and with just enough of a whiff of scandal to keep your attention at least on the story if not rivetted exactly. It's slow and easy. full of back story and gramatical horrors such as 'Ronnie said' 'Julie said' and so on. However this is a book and not a slow easy conversation just to pass the time and so all right is just about all it will ever be. For fans of the Midwest style of writing it's perfect. Not though for many other people.

I enjoyed this book very much, it is not a heavy listen but interesting enough.

The tale centres around the disturbing practices of a church that preaches "signs following" with snakes. The main characters are a 9 year old boy, Jess, whose mother is very tied up in the church, the county sheriff, an old man with a sad history of his own (tied to Jess' family) and an elderly lady from the church who stood up to the abusive pastor.
The book looks back at family life over several generations and the reasons the a community would fall under the thrall of such an abhorrent leader.
The characters are beautifully acted by the different readers and their stories told, with those they know in a way that is very convincing for the person they are.
