About this listen

The true story of 2 year-old Anna, abandoned by her natural parents, left alone in a neglected orphanage.

Elaine and Ian had travelled half way round the world to adopt little Anna. She couldn’t have been more wanted, loved and cherished. So why was she now in foster care and living with me? It didn’t make sense.

Until I learned what had happened. …

Dressed only in nappies and ragged T-shirts the children were incarcerated in their cots. Their large eyes stared out blankly from emaciated faces. Some were obviously disabled, others not, but all were badly undernourished. Flies circled around the broken ceiling fans and buzzed against the grids covering the windows. The only toys were a few balls and a handful of building bricks, but no child played with them. The silence was deafening and unnatural. Not one of the thirty or so infants cried, let alone spoke.

What a heart rending tale! I had to keep listening right to the end. well narrated although the age of the reader often makes me feel Cathy is much older than she is. Another great listen...

A poignant and detailed story

what a sad beginning for Anna, such a heartbreaking story. I really enjoy listening to Cathy's books. Her narrator Denica draws you in brilliantly and changes her voice for everyone involved. now I'm going to listening to the next one, im listening to them in order. 5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

The thing’s this child went through and the issues she had to deal with were at times exceptionally emotional but the transformation of her and the subsequent visit to her foster carer at the end of the book was extremely uplifting. It definitely took me on a rollercoaster of emotions listening to her story.

Adopted & abused child

Elaine and her husband were, despite all their guided planning before the adoption, misguided by wrong advice.
I believe that Cathy has a gift, fortified by experiential intuition - and I thank God that people like her exist, and that she chose her career in fostering.
I also want to absolutely acknowledge the school teacher (can’t remember her name) who shared her wisdom, experience, strength and hope with Cathy and later with Elaine - and that both listened to her! Such valuable advice and she didn’t hold it back. I absolutely agree - the past is not necessary nor helpful as a *constant* reminder and I love the phrase ‘you can’t start the next chapter of your book if you keep re-reading the previous’.
Excellent read (listen ) and am soo fond of Denica Fairmans narration. 5/5
