Summary

I was caught up early and swept along through most of this epic tale. Occasionally too much detail but action packed and well informed enough to be worth persevering.

George Guidalls voice is the right one for this book, though I did not feel so at first, and the writing is, as always, brilliant with Steven Pressfield

A superb audio book. Pressfield combines the Warrior ethos for which he is known together with a vivid picture of the ancient world in what we know as the early Christian period. Intertwined with these is a Letter said to be from Paul The Apostle. A book like no other. One that will linger & demands to be revisited.
Mr Guidall delivers an equally compelling performance.
It’s not necessary to be either Christian or of another faith or off none to enjoy, be moved by & appreciate “ A Man at Arms “ .

I’ve read a lot of historical fiction. In my experience, the author stretches a predictable formula over historical facts.

Mr Pressfield’s book is, in many ways, a predictable formula. Essentially, a rock hard worldly man partnered to an innocent girl on a shared journey. The historical context is that of the New Testament which is similarly familiar.

And yet, this tale is distinctly fresh, riveting, real to the senses and emotionally engaging.

The writing is epic without the feeling the author is trying to make it so.
