Summary
FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick has been waiting her whole life for disaster to strike. A prepper since childhood, Mercy grew up living off the land — and off the grid — in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. Until a shocking tragedy tore her family apart and forced her to leave home. Now a predator known as the cave man is targeting the survivalists in her hometown, murdering them in their homes, stealing huge numbers of weapons, and creating federal suspicion of a possible domestic terrorism event. But the crime scene details are eerily familiar to an unsolved mystery from Mercy’s past.
Sent by the FBI to assist local law enforcement, Mercy returns to Eagle’s Nest to face the family who shunned her while maintaining the facade of a law-abiding citizen. There, she meets police chief Truman Daly, whose uncle was the cave man’s latest victim. He sees the survivalist side of her that she desperately tries to hide, but if she lets him get close enough to learn her secret, she might not survive the fallout....

In a small town like Eagle's Nest everyone knows everything about everyone....or do they?
Having escaped 15 years ago Mercy never expected to return and certainly not like this, she struggles to wade through her old emotions that hit with wave after wave, the new perspective as she views her old town and the distrust of family and friends. Should she fight her old compulsions or embrace them? And can she trust herself around the new Police Chief?
Whilst you can not completely relate to Mercy (unless you have grown up a prepper) it is easy to relate to her fears and apprehension as it oozes from page after page. Returning to Eagles Nest is terrifying for her but you have to respect the determination and strength she shows as she faces every challenge thrown her way, digging deeper and deeper to uncover truths old and new.
I really like the tentative relationship Mercy and Truman form and look forward to more of their story as the series unfolds. I originally read this on Kindle Unlimited when it was first released, I listened this time on Audible with Kindle Unlimited.
And so it begins....
