About this listen

All is not what it seems...

In the murky London gloom, a knife-wielding gentleman named Jack prowls the midnight streets with his faithful watchdog Snuff—gathering together the grisly ingredients they will need for an ancient and unearthly rite. For soon after the death of the moon, black magic will summon the Elder Gods back into the world. And all manner of Players, both human and undead, are preparing to participate.

Some have come to open the gates. Some have come to slam them shut. And now the dread night approaches—so let the Game begin.

A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny is a delightful Halloween gem that oozes spooky charm. Its eerie, fog-drenched aesthetic perfectly captures the spirit of October, blending gothic whimsy with a chilling supernatural vibe. The cast of characters—witches, werewolves, and a clever canine narrator, Snuff—is wonderfully eclectic, each adding quirky depth to the tale. The Lovecraftian subplots weave cosmic dread into the mix, elevating the story with subtle, unsettling stakes. A must-read for anyone craving a playful yet haunting Halloween adventure!

This has been one of my favourite stories for years. I was concerned that the narrator would botch the character voices but no, he does a great job and the story cracks along at a wonderful pace.

Great story, well read
