Summary

Archie Logan, a country doctor, and his wife Liza lead an orthodox-seeming life, and everything is well until Archie's father, a widower for over 30 years, falls in love. His choice, a woman of powerful charm, has a profound effect on all the Logans, adults and children alike. The house and family turn from being a refuge to being a cage. Archie and Liza risk losing everything they have built. A Passionate Man is about a man's mid-life crisis and a woman's fear of failure. It is about fathers and sons, about sex and love, about loyalties and identities. It is also a story about modern village life.©2014 Audible, Inc (P)2014 Audible, Inc Fiction Genre Fiction

Critic reviews

"A compelling journey into the lives of two ordinary people coping with extraordinary events." (Booklist)

The prose is well-constructed and fluent, but the premise is not very believable and neither did I find the emotions described relatable.
The reading was good and the accents warm and consistent. What was irritating though was the faint chatter in the far background. Clearly the recording space used was not fully soundproofed!

Well-written, yet oddly unsatisfying

When scenes change without the chapter changing too, there is absolutely no pause in the reading, so it takes time to realise the story has moved on. The characterisation of voices is good, however. I was not impressed with the 2 main characters - both act stupidly and a bit selfishly. Generally a rather depressing book - not one of her best.

Not the slightest pause between scenes

I thought I had read all of Joanna Trollope's books decades ago, but must have missed this one.

It was a good family aga-saga really. A bit surprising in places I thought. Also, it was certainly a book "of its time", much of it is now dated...but that is ok with me.

Very well performed by the wonderful Eleanor Bron. But then, she could read and narrate a cereal packet and it would sound brilliant!

A good book, lacking in some aspects

There was a buzzing in the background & towards the end, other voices could be heard, like a radio in the background. Never had this problem with Audible before.

Poor Sound Quality

Eleanor Bron is such a delightful narrator- the story was a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end. It was rather like a warm shawl around you on a pleasant but slightly chilly British summer evening.

Loved every minute of it!
