Summary

The House of Farrell - home of The Cream, an iconic face product that has seen women flocking to its bijoux flagship store in the Berkeley Arcade since 1953.

At Farrell, you can rely on the personal touch. The legendary Athina Farrell remains the company's figurehead and in her kingdom at the Berkeley Arcade, Florence Hamilton plies their cosmetics with the utmost discretion. She is sales advisor - and holder of secrets - extraordinaire.

But of course the world of cosmetics is changing and the once glorious House of Farrell is now in decline, its customers tempted away by more fashionable brands.

Enter Bianca Bailey, formidable business woman, mother of three, and someone who always gets her way. Athina and Bianca lock horns over the future of the House of Farrell but it is the past that tells its devastating tale of ambition and ego, passion and wonder.

Here is a tale of survival ... and a kind of promise.

The book was very long so kept me entertained for a very long time. I found it increasingly gripping after a fairly slow start. I couldn't put it down for the final ten chapters and listened instead of watching TV or listening to my favourite programmes on the radio!

Gripping second half

Swept into the world of cosmetics with an easy listen and story. It made sewing and painting time pass quickly.

I have read all of Penny Vincenzi s books and find each one better than the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the narrator was excellent.
This is the story of a grand dame of the cosmetics world Athena Farrell who established her company with her husband and gradually brings in other family members over the years. She controls everything until the company hits hard times and venture capitalists are brought in to turn things around.
The best thing about Penny Vincenzi books are her characterisations. It is unashamedly a woman's book and most definitely the one to take on summer hols. I would love to see all Penny's books on Audible any chance?

Loved it!

I have loved all the Penny Vincenzi books - read them years ago and now listening to the audiobooks. Brilliantly narrated by Sandra Duncan !

Brilliant gripping story!

The story was very good. Maybe a little too drawn out. The characters were well presented. I liked the conclusion with all the ends tied up. The story covered many issues, including the importance of life work balance, bullying and the struggles of getting older and having to 'let go'
There was one character who wasn't involved too much in the story, but at one point I almost stopped listening. This would have been a pity because I was enjoying the story. However, the language and blasphemy really was not necessary and quite offensive.

A really good story
