About this listen

In the Peak District village of Scarsdale, 13-year-old girls didn’t just run away. So when Alison Carter vanished in the winter of '63, everyone knew it was a murder.

Catherine Heathcote remembers the case well - a child herself when Alison vanished. Now a journalist, she persuades DI George Bennett to speak of the hunt for Alison. But when a fresh lead emerges, Bennett tries to stop the story - plunging Catherine into a world of buried secrets and revelations.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Place of Execution to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the book but cannot fault my enjoyment of the audio reading. As with all of this author's books you are quickly gripped by the story and whisked away. The characters are well written and have great 'human' flaws. I would recommend to any reader of this genre as it is a cracking story and well worth trying a Val McDermid book.

Another great book from Val

Very well crafted and sensitively performed! Could not put it down and would listen to another book by author! Also enjoyed the reading very much, moving at a good pace but not hurried or without empathy!
All round excellent!

Superb!

What a brilliant book!!! Was a little slow to start & took me a long time (& a lot of concentration) to understand who was who & how they were related, to the point I almost turned off & started something else!! But I'm so glad I stuck with it!! I couldn't stop listening! I can usually guess plot twists but a few of these I did not see coming!! Narration is great & everything is tied up in the end! I can't recommend this enough!!
I'm now going to have a book hangover that's going to take me days to recover from!!

Stick with it because it becomes brilliant!!!

I really enjoyed this - a great twist to bring it forward in time. The characters were excellent and I felt great empathy with them.

A great book

What a great story! This story of the disappearance of a teenage girl against the backdrop of the Moors Murders in the 1960s hooked me in right from the start. The police investigation and subsequent trial is described in great detail and made me feel like I was investigating with them. It is very cleverly written and brilliantly plotted, though perhaps a little overlong, and the ending is shocking and unexpected but also quite believable. The characters are well developed and realistic and I really liked Detective Inspector George Bennett and his sidekick, Tommy Clough, and would have liked to see them again.

The narration by Paddy Glynn added to my enjoyment of the book.

Brilliant!
