The humanoid Red Martians who are allies of the protagonist, Carter, control the planet’s system of canals. When Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Helium is captured by the Tharks, Carter recues her. Against his will, Carter becomes embroiled in the politics of the Red and Green Martians in his mission to keep Dejah from harm, eventually leading the Tharks against Zodanga, the historic enemy of Helium.
