Summary

Two seventeen-year-olds are killed by an ex-Army loner who has gone off the rails. The mystery takes Rebus into the heart of a shattered community. Ex-Army himself, Rebus becomes fascinated by the killer, and finds he is not alone. Army investigators are on the scene, and won't be shaken off. The killer had friends and enemies to spare and left behind a legacy of secrets and lies.

Rebus has more than his share of personal problems, too. He's fresh out of hospital, but won't say how it happened. Could there be a connection with a house-fire and the unfortunate death of a petty criminal who had been harassing Rebus's colleague Siobhan Clarke?

Another exceptional Rebus novel, great story, couldn't put this one down, and narration was, as always, awesome.

As always...

Only a personal view I know but for me this is the best story yet. I loved the whole tangle and untangle of the story. Of course, James Macpherson narrated in his own inimitable way and I think he is great. This is a book I will keep and certainly listen to again ( not many books I do this with!)

The best book to date!

We learn about Rebus and get inside the man's mind, while we watch his self admitted "bull in a china shop" methods of policing.
A great book, good story, with lots of twists and turns that is excellently narrated.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

I love Rebus books having read/listened to 14. However, this one is good, but pushes the limits of fiction, bordering on silly. Rebus is under investigation, then suspended, yet he is still on the case? The characters make it, some key funny bits, but again the characters make it a good book, with James MacPherson doing a great job.

Love Rebus, But this one pushes the limits

Another brilliant episode in the complicated life of DI John Rebus. Ian Rankin excels again and James Macpherson's narrations is perfect. Highly recommended!
