About this listen

Following his 2019 production of A Raisin in the Sun, celebrated as "an absorbing, watershed revival," by The New York Times, Robert O’Hara returns to Williamstown Theatre Festival to direct this Tennessee Williams masterpiece. With Emmy, Grammy, and six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald as Blanche DuBois alongside Carla Gugino as Stella, O’Hara takes a fresh and visceral look at the emotionally charged relationship between these two iconic sisters. Haunted by her past, Blanche seeks refuge with Stella and Stanley (Ariel Shafir) in New Orleans, where she wrestles with the nature of her sister’s husband, her sister’s denial, and her own unraveling mind.

An interesting listen- plot/characters/performance are all strong. Rated 3 stars simply for the audible experience- it was difficult to follow when characters talked over each other and during the more intense scenes as it wasn’t clear who was there/what was happening. As an audible experience, the ending seems very abrupt and I imagine it would be difficult for someone visiting the play for the first time to work out what happened!

Great play with good performances but very difficult to follow at times as audio only!

Stunning performances! Brilliant production. Scintillating dialogue. Blew me away - a mind expanding tale of human failings. I shall be giving this a double take!!

It took me a little while to get into this version of this harrowing story of abuse. The acting was outstanding I felt like I was watching and in the characters heads. Brilliant 🤩

Loved what the black cast did with this play- a really powerful interpretation. I also like the 20 mins at the end with the director explaining their choices. Very helpful for me as an English teacher teaching this for A level lit!

Powerful performance with great cast
