Summary

We could tell you about the bodies. We could tell you their names, where they were found, the states they were in. We could tell you about the suspects, too, the evidence, the investigators; join a few dots, even throw you a motive.

But what would be the point? After all, you know these people. You went to school with them. We all did. So if you really knew them then, you’ll already have all the answers....

Critic reviews

"This is the book I would want if I were marooned on a desert island or lost in space." ( Independent)
"Another astonishing performance, travelling deeper and more movingly into human emotions than his previous works, without sacrificing his comic zest or meticulous plotting." ( The Times)

What a great read. It was like re- living my school years with all the hierarchical struggles and relationships with an up yo date murder mystery unravelling at the same time.
I loved it and will certainly make my way through Brookmyre's library.

Witty plot twisting throwback thriller.

I really liked this book as it was a different type of mystery novel. The flashback in time reminded me of my school days so I could relate to the story and the characters with fondness. The narrator was fab & made the story come to life.

Very enjoyable

I'd read a few of his other books years ago and this also didn't disappoint.

The whole thing was thoroughly witty, as all of his books are, but the way this tells the stories of the same characters in different times to build up the narrative was excellently done.

There is a lot of local words utilised, but explanations were cleverly included so that it didn't detract from the flow.

Looking forward to reading more of Brookmyre's books very soon.

Adored it.

What a belter! Took me right through my own childhood, and probably that of many that grew up in a wee Scottish town in the 70’s and early 80’s. No crimes in my case and the names were different but the characters, their thoughts, their feelings and the all too serious at the time situations were all there. Thoughtful, raw and at times tender, this was a gem of a book.
