About this listen

Ice is in her blood.

Eighteen-year-old Waterrunner Eira Landan lives her life in the shadows - the shadow of her older brother, of her magic’s whispers, and of the person she accidentally killed. She’s the most unwanted apprentice in the Tower of Sorcerers until the day she decides to step out and compete for a spot in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms.

Pitted against the best sorcerers in the Empire, Eira fights to be one of four champions. Excelling in the trials has its rewards. She’s invited to the royal court with the “Prince of the Tower”, discovers her rare talent for forbidden magic, and at midnight, Eira secretly meets with a handsome elfin ambassador.

But, Eira soon learns, no reward is without risk. As she comes into the spotlight, so too do the skeletons of a past she hadn’t even realized was haunting her. Eira went into the trials ready for a fight. Ready to win. She wasn’t ready for what it would cost her. No one expected the candidates might not make it out with their lives.

A Trial of Sorcerers is the first book in a brand new, young adult, epic fantasy series intended for listeners who love stories involving: sorcerer competitions, slow-burn romance, adventures to distant lands, and elemental magic. The story is set in the Air Awakens universe, but is it’s own unique story. Listeners new to the universe can start here!

Eira is under estimated and wow when she steps up to prove that she is stronger then everyone is giving her credit for. Also a secret that changes everything comes to light.

A Trial of Sorcerers was such an enjoyable read. The FMC is strong, engaging, and easy to root for. The plot moves at a great pace and the trust and relationship dynamics give the story real emotional weight.

The audiobook is a pleasure to listen to. The narrator’s soft voice makes the world even easier to sink into.

If you enjoyed the Air Awakens series, this is a perfect next step.

📚 A Trial of Sorcerers by Elise Kova

A fast-paced story of magical academia, court intrigue and betrayal, the first installment in the Trial of Sorcerers series is perfect for those itching for a classic Fantasy.

With elemental magic at the forefront, the unveiling of a series of trials has competitors vying for the top spot in their element to be able to compete in another kingdom. However, the powers in this book extend further than just air, water, earth and fire. The way Kova has encouraged these elemental manipulations also allows for more types of magic, including: illusions, whispers from objects, armour, light weilding and more.

Our FMC, Eira, seems to make a string of unfortunate decisions in an attempt to prove herself capable of standing on her own two feet in a bid to remove herself from her brothers shadow. However, Eira's character grows over the course of the book, becoming stronger and more confident in a way that you can't help but root for.

Eira's best friend, Alice, is one of the best parts of this story. She's supportive and a perfect example of chosen family, and seems to be one of the only characters who has a truly unwavering loyalty to Eira. The character of Noelle also intrigued me as Kova made sure to go against the typical popular girl stereotype, and create a character who is unashamed to admit wrongdoings while still remaining confident. I can't wait to see more of how this character develops in future books.
