'A cracking storyteller' ANN CLEEVES

There is more to solving a crime than following the clues.
Welcome to Chief Inspector Gamache's world of facts and feelings.

In the green depths of spring, morning breaks on a woman splayed in a bed of flowers - her eyes wide, her neck broken.

Her death is a mystery; so is the woman herself. But as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his team peer into the dark corners of the victim's past, they expose a secret that rots at the very heart of their community - a secret that will implicate someone they've trusted for years. And as Gamache knows too well, in the flickering shadows of death, the truth may be just a trick of the light.

Critic reviews

Stellar . . . With her smart plot and fascinating, nuanced characters, Penny proves again that she is one of our finest writers
Outstanding . . . Penny effectively employs the interplay of light and dark . . . which resonates symbolically in the souls of the characters
A commanding and artful performance . . . For connoisseurs of mysteries, success is judged by the genre's holy trinity: plot, people and prose. When all three attain excellence, a fourth quality shines through: power . . . what lifts her work to the highest plane is the deep sense of humanity with which she invests her novels, and A TRICK OF THE LIGHT satisfies and surpasses that standard
Louise Penny's writing is intricate, beautiful and compelling. She is an original voice, a distillation of both PD James and Barbara Vine at their peaks and a worthy successor to both

Not only are these books excellent with great pace and plot the narrator really adds something special - at first I didn’t like all the voices but now I can’t imagine anyone else reading it

Great Book, Great Narration

I love this series. The narration is perfect. You feel you actually know each of the characters. I am following the series in order, because story lines from previous books are often referred to in subsequent ones but they can be read / listened to as stand alone titles.

Couldn't stop listening.

What did you like most about A Trick of the Light?

this is one of a series of books set in Canada about the police there. I have read or listened to all the books in the series and can recommend them all . the writing pulls you in from the first page and I feel such an affinity for the characters . I have to remind myself that these aren't real people . the stories are always original and ive learnt so much about Canada along the way . the information is always relevant to the story , not shoehorned in . louise penny as a n author has matured vastly overthis series . what started off in her first books as good interesting writing has grown into real heft .

Who was your favorite character and why?

gamache , the lead character is my favourite character . he is so strong and so well rounded . he feels like a real person and throughout the books we learn what makes him tick both at work and with his friends and family . a very memorable character

Have you listened to any of Adam Sims’s other performances? How does this one compare?

adam sims has done an excellent job conveying the flavour and tempo of this book . he is very easy to listen to and his slight nuances and change of reading pace makes it easy to identify all the characters. sterling work

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes . luckily it was too long and dense so I made it last a bit longer ! . it was a tense listen at times because the story was so emotional and there were quite a few "just five more minutes" listening

Any additional comments?

I can highly recommend this author (and reader) I would suggest new readers start at the beginning and work through the series . they will be well rewarded .

wonderful read

Don't miss this one

I love the Inspector Gamache series. Louise Penny lays out a structured approach of investigation, unlike many other authors who somehow fall on the murderer at the end by sheer chance and no logic. I also love the way she includes some, but not too much history of Canada. Just enough to make it all very interesting.

Another amazing read
