This definitely wasn’t as strong for me as the first book in the duet, which was a little disappointing because I really enjoyed book one.

The mafia side of the story is still very much there, and there are some pretty graphic violent scenes involving side characters, so the world still feels brutal and dangerous in the way you’d expect from this kind of book. But overall, I just didn’t feel as invested this time around and found myself getting a bit bored in places.

Emilia was probably my biggest issue here. I really liked her in the first book because she had so much fire to her, but in this one she felt flatter to me and lost some of the spark that made me so invested in her character before. Gio still felt very much like Gio, but something about their dynamic just didn’t hit the same way for me in this book.

It’s not a bad read at all, and I still liked parts of it, but overall it just didn’t leave the same impression on me as the first book did.
