About this listen

When fantasy becomes reality . . .

The last thing nanny Alice Sommers needs is to be caught skinny-dipping by her sexy, cranky-pants boss—in his pool. Her sister owes a crap-load of money to a slimy loan shark and Alice really needs this job if she has any hope of saving her family. Fortunately, her boss is richer than sin and needs her just as much.

Art dealer Lorenzo Baldi will lose his prestigious career if his anarchist father's paintings are revealed to the art world. He's determined to persuade the paintings' eccentric owner to sell them to him, even if to pull it off, he'll have to blackmail his daughter's nanny—a woman with the sexy curves of a Botticelli masterpiece—into being his fake fiance.

The gorgeous island of Capri inspires some major misbehaving. But even as the loan shark breathes down Alice's neck and the paintings move closer to the art scene, Lorenzo drops one more bomb that will change everything.

Contains mature themes.

Storyline is moderately believable for a rich guy, poor gal romance. Most characters are relatable though the suddenly burgeoning attraction between the MCs is rather rushed and very undeveloped. I thought the author could have written far more detail into a number of the scenes which would have injected a greater degree of realism into the tale.

Having listened to a number of Ms Wilde's other novels and serials, that's a criticism I have about much of her writing. However, it's probably necessary to write in this way to be able to publish so many new books each year. The lack of detail is less obvious in the serials (though it's still evident there to a degree) but I think it's a lazy way of writing a standalone.

If you're looking for spice, it is here but don't expect anything particularly racy. There are numerous intimate scenes (not so many as to unbalance the plot) and they are detailed but only up to the point of being unlikely to embarrass you in public spaces. They're certainly not explicit and don't expect to hear growls of predatory possessiveness, moans of desperate loss of control or screams of unleashed ecstacy in the telling of these parts of the story.

In fact, the narration is extremely disappointing throughout. The pacing and tone are poor and there are mispronunciations dotted right through the tale. The narrator doesn't appear to be interested in the story they're telling nor does he seem to be excited by it. If he's not switched on by what he's being paid to read, how can an audience who have paid to listen to it be expected to find it a thrill?

Overall, it's an undemanding listen but nothing special and you'll find more excitement in a Jane Austen novel than you will here. A waste of a credit I'm afraid and deleted from my devices. I've got a couple of other standalones by Ms Wilde to read and one more serial but if these are no better, I won't be bothering to look for more by this author.

Reasonable plot but rather undeveloped overall.
