German U-boats are getting through the defences. In this wonderfully heartwarming and gripping saga by Vicki Beeby, it's up to the Wrens to stop them.

After her fiancé dies in the sinking of the Royal Oak, Mary finds herself stationed in Orkney, still battling her grief. With Iris and Sally by her side, she is gradually overcoming her loss and is surprised to be helped by the irascible Joe.

Joe is a signalman aboard the Kelpie and his cheeky Morse code messages to Mary while she's on shift bring her cheer and exasperation in equal measure. With Christmas round the corner, Mary is opening herself back up to the festive spirit—and to love.

But the Germans keep slipping through Scapa Flow's defences, somehow avoiding triggering any of the Navy's alarms. Could someone on land be guiding them? If so, can Mary, Iris and Sally figure out who and stop them before more lives are lost?

A compelling story about Rose, Iris and Sally, Visual Signallers in the WRNS stationed in Orkney during 1942. It was amazing how they made do with what little they had by way of food, material, drawing paper and handcuffs. They played parlour games and walked nearly 2 miles to work at the signal station and back for each watch. With only the radio they made their own entertainment, as well as clothes, unlike today. If anything the plot was ultra predictable and slow to reach the denouement. Nonetheless it was an exciting setting at a time of war with heroes and plenty of romance.

enjoyed the follow in from the first book, the evolving friendships, how the characters made the most of what they had a Christmas. Enough intrigue and some perililous events Keith the story entertaining

narrator brought the story to life
