This is the third installment of the 13-part series Adventures in Colonial America. This installment focuses on the Maryland colony, established and governed for more than a century by six men, the Calverts, who became the Lords Baltimore.

Maryland was founded as a haven for English Catholics, persecuted by the Protestants in England and the English government as well. However, the intent of Maryland's founders was never fulfilled because of feuds between Catholics and Protestants and the eventually takeover of the colony by the British government, turning it from a proprietary colony to a royal colony under the control of the British government.

Because religious persecution played such an important role in Maryland's colonial history, a historical survey of religious persecution - Christian vs. Jew and Christian vs. Christian - in England is also provided.

This issue also focuses on the important role Maryland's colonists played as the colonies moved toward independence, and in the debates that ensued about the provisions of the U.S. Constitution after the American Revolution.
