Summary

This publisher's pack contains Society (book three) and Hope (book four) of the After It Happened series.

Society, book three:

Set in the UK in the immediate aftermath of a mysterious illness which swept the country and left millions dead, the series follows the trials facing a reluctant hero, Dan, and the group he forms around him. They must battle the elements, find sufficient supplies and equipment to survive, and protect themselves against the most destructive force on the planet: other people.

The survivors have prospered, but their home is an enticing prospect for others to take. Besieged, they must respond with a savagery to dissuade further attempts.

Is this the end of society?

Hope, book four:

In the aftermath of the shocking revelations about the propagation of the human race, Dan latches on to a desperate chance to change the future which many have accepted. The group splits and Dan leads his closest allies on an uncertain journey to find a solution. They find themselves battling against the elements, against new foes, and above all, against time.

They must succeed.

They must have hope.

This series has proved to be a real find.  Each of the books in the first four follows the same group but has its own unique flavour.  The first two were largely about the initial group forming and then a very logical and structured progression towards a new society.  Book 3, Society,  is much more explosive, it is almost non-stop action as the new homeland is threatened in all manner of ways.  The group also find ways to investigate the origins of the pandemic.  The epilogue feels hugely ominous, it's extremely well done.

Then the fourth book. Hope, takes off in yet another completely new direction as the group splits with Dan leading a team on the start of an epic journey desperate to find answers. During both books the characters continue to develop, especially Leah and Ash.  Yes the dog steals the show at times!  The story is split between Dan's group and the enormous struggle faced by those left behind after losing much of the group's driving force.

RC Bray, I don't think there's much I can say here that hasn't already been said.  Superb, and he is even more suited to these latest two books with their increased tension and higher octane levels.

In short this is becoming an extremely strong series especially with the excellent decision to provide these value for money / credit publisher's packs.

An equal mix of fear and elation keeps you on your toes and Mr Bray is excellent as usual.

Great listen

Although partially ruined by the use of an American narrator, this is still an excellent book. The accents are badly done and simple things like the English version of ‘lieutenant’ are incorrect.
But if you had the previous books you will be used to this by now and you really do need these to see what’s going on.

Excellent book

Read or Listen.
I honestly thought that the story would develop into a repetitive cycle of a survival story mayhem, death and of course, the survival of the fittest, toward a new world ambrosia, using old world beliefs. Supported by power, numbers, followers and weapons.
To some extent it has, is, but with verve, purpose and continued interest in a great group of events, toward a great story. As my heading states, evolution, at cost to the various individuals and groups who perceive that they are "doing the right thing" in order to survive whatever moral codes they use or adapt.
Those reading this review and are at this stage of the story will understand my thoughts and pro's. Those who are thinking of commencing the story of "after it happened", should start as we all should, at the beginning as I feel that this story is up there on apocalyptic novels as the Road, the Stand and especially Children of Men!
I can't wait to commence books five and six.
