Summary

When I agreed to my wife’s request for an open marriage, I didn’t anticipate she’d fall in love with another man and leave me.

Alone now and drowning in self-destruction, I cling to memories of a trip to New Orleans nine months ago—the night I wandered into a movie theater called Paradise and spent an evening talking with the beautiful owner, Violet Devollier. Our connection was brief but intense.

It was a connection so intense that when Hurricane Katrina devastates New Orleans, I’ll stop at nothing to return to Paradise and find Violet.

But what good is a broken man in a broken city? To have any chance of a future with Violet, I’ll have to find the courage to piece myself back together as we rebuild Paradise after the storm.

Book three of the award-winning Lost in Austin series, After the Storm is a slow burn interracial romance which can be listened to as a standalone. It was the 2023 winner of the Readers’ Favorite Honorable Mention for Romance–Sizzle.

Christina Berry created something very special when she created her “Lost in Austin” series, and some things that make it so special are the characters, their relationships, and storylines. The characters are realistic and relatable, each going on an emotional journey, emotions that hit you straight in the heart. This third book is Greg’s story, and the title is fitting in more ways than one, with the first being the storm and turmoil when he lost his way after his marriage fell apart. Thank goodness for his good friend and guardian angel, Jake, who helped him pick himself up and get the help he needed. While still on shaky ground, his job had brought him down to New Orleans, where he met an intriguing woman, Violet Devollier, and the connection he felt with her went deep. They may have only spent a brief time together, but it left a big impression, and when he heard about Hurricane Katrina and the devastation it left behind, he knew he had to go there to find her and help. I adored Violet and her friends, another found family who had each other’s backs, and they accepted Greg with open arms, too. This book held my attention in a stronghold, and nothing else around me mattered except what was going to happen next. I loved all the layers of the story and how it all played out, with the perfect balance of drama, angst, profound emotions, and a slow-burn, but so worth the wait, romance. It was also a trip back in time, remembering the news of Hurricane Katrina, the Cajun army, and what that area and community endured. As always, Berry’s writing, plot, and world-building are fantastic, as are the complexity of the characters, their growth and development. Thank you for another brilliant story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the amazing audiobook listen and production performed by Janina Edwards and Bryant Walker, who were the perfect cast to bring the characters to life and did so with a complete understanding of who they were portraying. I loved how they took each role and made it their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters would sound. Janina Edwards was a natural in Violet’s role, grasping every aspect of her personality, from her sass to her strength, as well as her vulnerabilities. Walker was just as amazing as Greg, embodying the role completely, showcasing his personality and demeanor perfectly, from his caring heart to his battles with inner demons. Both were fantastic performing the roles of the side and secondary characters, giving each a voice that was fitting, accents and all. They set the ideal tone for the story, and their expressive performance conveyed their characters’ every emotion, and they had you feel each one. These two versatile voice artists are a fabulous pairing, with voices and talent that complement each other and a captivating performance that rivets you to the story.
