Agatha Christie’s new publisher suggests she visits a quaint village, Chipping Morten, to inspire her to complete her next Miss Marple manuscript.

But, who is the Marple-mad fan, who is following the bestselling murder mystery author?

And, upon arrival at the village, a Miss Marple-inspired murder is announced, with a suspicious familiarity.

Can someone really be using Agatha's Miss Marple books as a template for... murder?

This was altogether a lovely listen. It is crisply written, and the performance is excellent, well modulated, and suited to the style of the story. The sound design also works well, insofar as it is not intrusive. Obviously, it helps that the writer is clearly a fan of the author that they are pastiching. I was expecting an avalanche of references and in-jokes, but the writing is admirably restrained in this area. There are a few ("The 4:50 TO Paddington", indeed!) but not so many as to be of detriment to the story.

It also, and this is a blessing in this era, does not outstay its welcome. It lasts as long as it needs to to tell the story, and no longer. It can easily be listened to in one or two sessions. I listened to it on two long walks across the city and it suited my situation perfectly.

You don't actually need to have read any Christie before experiencing this, in my opinion, but once you have listened you will probably want to try The Moving Finger and A Murder is Announced, just to see what is being referenced. Provided, that is, you haven't already done so.
