Summary

Agatha's away with the fairies . . .

And the little folk are causing big trouble for her! Angry at being jilted by new husband James, Agatha follows a fortune-teller's advice and rents a cottage in pretty Fryfam. There, she hopes, true love will come chasing after her. But her romantic notions are dispelled by a series of odd goings-on in the village: strange lights start appearing in her back garden; there are thefts of paintings and pottery; her beloved cats vanish. And then the local squire is found dead. Agatha's nose for trouble ensnares her in a maelstrom of jealousy, blackmail and dangerous liaisons, especially with a murderer who plans to keep irrepressible Agatha permanently in Fryfam - as a resident corpse!

Praise for the Agatha Raisin series:

'Sharp, witty, hugely intelligent, unfailingly entertaining, delightfully intolerant and oh so magnificently non-PC, M.C. Beaton has created a national treasure' Anne Robinson

'M.C. Beaton's imperfect heroine is an absolute gem' Publishers Weekly

'The Miss Marple-like Raisin is a refreshing, sensible, wonderfully eccentric, thoroughly likeable heroine.' Booklist©2000 M.C. Beaton

Agatha Raisin is as always.... good. So is Penelope Keith reading the story. I cannot imagine anyone else doing the dialogue. Agatha reminds me of myself.

Agatha at her best...

Enjoyed the story, kept us guessing. Totally non PC and great fun. A shame the epilogue was so short though.

Jolly good yarn

What made the experience of listening to Agatha Raisin and the Fairies of Fryfam the most enjoyable?

I like these books. There are many to choose from and I can download each one as I want them. It is light reading/listening. M C Beaton is not a sensationalist writer. The Agatha Raisin series are 'nice' detective stories with nothing really nasty lurking to frighten the reader. The books are comfortable and very amusing. If you like gritty thrillers then these books are not for you. I like serious and gritty murder mystery books too but Agatha Raisin I like to read in between to lighten up my listening experience.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Agatha Raisin and the Fairies of Fryfam?

I found this book very likeable. They all are but this one particularly so. Agatha is out of her comfort zone and in a unfamiliar village in this book. She sees lights at the end of the garden and small items go missing from the houses where these 'fairy' lights are seen. Not believing in fairies in the least, Agatha sets off to investigate. The story was particularly convoluted for an Agatha book and I didn't guess who it was that was bumping people off. it was very amusing in parts as all Raisin books are. This one features Sir Charles Fraith, one of Agatha's friends, fellow sleuth and occasional lover, more than usual. It was a very entertaining book.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I particularly liked the part in the book where Agatha encourages the wives of the men who go to the local pub every night to ogle the local landlady who has, shall we say, appealing assets for men. Agatha rallies the wives and takes them into the pub and sets about to show the men, to their outrage, that the ladies can have a jolly good night out too. I enjoyed the story a lot.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

In this book there was not a part that moved me as such. Agatha books are more amusing than moving I think, but some of the other Raisin books can have moving scenes in them.

Any additional comments?

M C Beaton Agatha Raisin books are a really good read and lighter than other murder mystery novels. I like them but theirs might not. I like many genres in books and have an eclectic taste in books. My only criticism is they are not long enough. I like a book to be at least 10 hours long but these books are normally around 6 hours. A good length if you don't want to get caught up in a book for hours on end.

Usual amusing writing from Beaton

Well I enjoyed the antics of Agatha Raisin. For someone who's mind is sharp at solving mysteries and murders, she is hopeless around men. James will never make a good husband, plus I am not sure Agatha would make a good wife either 😂😂 love passing the time with these easy books. Good story that kept me occupied all afternoon. Will try book 11 next

Enjoyable story

Very enjoyable, the change of location combined with the fresh faces and some old familiars made it really stimulating.

Refreshing location and people
