Summary

The official prequel leading into the upcoming Aliens cooperative third-person survival shooter video game, Aliens: Fireteam, from Cold Iron Studios.

Dr. Timothy Hoenikker arrives on Pala Station, a Weyland-Yutani facility. Lured there by the promise of alien artifacts, instead he finds a warped bureaucracy and staff of misfits testing the effects of Xenomorph bio-materials on living creatures. Unbeknownst to the personnel, however, there is an infiltrator among them whose actions could spell disaster.

Also on staff is Victor Rawlings, a former marine who gathers together other veterans to prepare for the worst. As the personnel receive a delivery of alien eggs, the experiments spin out of control, and only the former Colonial Marines can stand between the humans and certain death.

The story leaves it open, this is due to it laying the foundations for a new game. I hope in time, as what happened with Alien isolation, a story based on the game will happen.

I was really looking forward to this book, and though it started a bit slowly there was a good build up of tension and some interesting characters. The narrator did a great job with his accents and with the story, and he really brought it to life.

The story itself was well constructed and an interesting idea, similar in theme to others of this genre.

Once I got into this book it was easy to get invested in the characters. They all had a specific role to play and Cruz was particularly interesting, especially his motivations for trying to save the scientists. It all built up very successfully to a climax and then (I thought hopefully) the epilogue would finish things off nicely. Certain characters had learnt and evolved and were now leadership material and it was like, “Well great, off we go.”

(SPOILER BIT)

Now I know this genre tends to have a certain type of ending, but this one literally made all of the characters’ trials and tribulations (and reasons for doing what they did) totally null and void. It all came together nicely, and then it just… went… bang!!

Such a shame because I’d really enjoyed the book up to that point. In future listenings I think I’ll be stopping it at the point where I think it should have finished - and not listening on any further.

So to summarise, great book, great build up of tension, interesting characters and a great narrator - however, bad ending.

See a lot of reviews saying the story was bad and dialogue was clunky. What did you want Charles Dicken's!?

If you love the Alien universe you'll love this. It has all the usual Alien tropes, scientists try to experiment with xenos, xenos break out, xenos eat scientists, that being said there are some nice monster variations not normally seen.

The story is interesting and well paced. You can tell its a video game tie in as writer references locations etc that the characters never actually get to see.

Overall 4/5 worth a credit!

Scientists are stoopid..

It's not high drama or a suberb story, but in its own genre it accomplishes what it sets out to do.

Entertaining
