Summary

On the last day of June, my bush pilot left me alone and without food in a wilderness rain forest of Southeast Alaska. He would return in September.

For the next 10 weeks my survival would depend on foraging, hunting, and fishing on an island I would share with 1,600 brown bears.

This is my story of hunger and solitude, salmon fishing and stormy seas, torrential rains and mountain sunsets, giant halibut and deer hunting, campfires and killer whales.

He does speak fast throughout so you may need to slow it down on your player, other than that, excellent listen

Good book

I came to know the author through the DVD of his float and hunt through Alaska. He lives the life many of us hope we did.
This is a great adventure too. The only criticism is I felt throughout the book he read too fast, like he was in a hurry. This was in contrast to how I wanted to relive his adventure, at the slower pace which solo travel brings.
You’ll be glad you bought this though.

A most interesting man

What an interesting man and adventure.
To be an hunter gatherer in this modern age and to thrive leaves me with nothing but admiration. Definitely recommend.

A thoroughly enjoyable listen

Very nice book, worth playing at a slightly lower speed as it’s a bit fast on the Audible app,

Good true life account

I liked hearing the author’s passion for adventure and he’s skilled in living off the land. Seeing bears and whales and the seasonal changes in a wild place sounded profoundly special and I was glad to hear about those experiences. I would have liked to have heard more about the purpose of his journey and his learning from it. The book became too much of a day by day account of creatures killed, canned and eaten. It’s understandable that anyone living off the land this way would be obsessed with food and especially a hunter / fisher. But I started to feel all the killing was a bit of a pointless massacre because it wasn’t clear if anything worthwhile was coming out of it all, other than another day survived. It would have sounded more convincingly like another day lived fully had there been more reflection on the accompanying internal adventure too. But this author is easy to listen to, despite all that.

Enjoyable listen but lacking reflection
