WINNER OF THE HUGO, LOCUS AND BRAM STOKER AWARDS

After three years in prison, Shadow Moon is free to go home. But hours before his release, his beloved wife is killed in a freak accident. Numbly, he boards a plane where he meets an enigmatic stranger who seems to know Shadow and claims to be an ancient god - and king of America.

Together they embark on a profoundly strange road trip across the USA, encountering a kaleidoscopic cast of characters along the way. But all around them a storm of unnatural proportions is gathering.

War is coming, an epic struggle for the very soul of America. And Shadow is standing squarely in its path.

I'd listened to the Anansi Boys narrated by Lenny Henry and loved it, knowing at the time that it was vaguely connected to American Gods, but Lenny was the draw.

Don't know why but I wasn't particularly drawn to American Gods, but after constant recommendations I thought I'd seek out the audiobook. Initially I was put off by the reviews regarding the narration, but decided to proceed with caution.

The narration is perfect for the book and kept me entertained from chapter to chapter, an absolute pleasure to listen too.

The story itself is so full personality. I became attached to many of the characters, but none more so than Shadow. I was upset when it ended and I hope to enter into that world again soon.

My new favourite book

I last listened to a Neil Gaiman children's book which I loved and happened to mention to my daughter. She recommended this. It is definitely not a children's book, there are fantastic images which will stay in my head forever. Somehow the unacceptable and unusual become the norm. The book raised questions I'd never asked before.

Great experience. I think it did for me what the Hobbit did at age 10 and Titus Groan in my 20s. It is not How Green Was My Valley.

Brilliant and Thought Provoking

A brilliant take on the legends of the world in a completely ludicrous way that makes any use of technology redundant. Timelessness built in

Simply Superb. Transcends tech changes deliciously

I have to confess, this is the first audiobook that I've heard end to end.
What makes American Gods such a good listen, apart from a great story, and I'm also listening to other great stories from other wonderful authors, is the excellent production, and cast. The book becomes a radio play, that I wanted to give my ear to, as often as I could. Generally, with audiobooks, I become so familiar with the voice of the person reading, that I inadvertently begin to tune out, no matter how well they read, and personify the characters. The production on American Gods, for me, was like listening in colour.
If you'd like to have your ears have an audible treat, then hand over your coin, and enjoy a good listen.

A Brilliant Listen.

I’d seen the show advertised, and was aware when passing through a book shop at an air port that it was in fact a book before it was a show. So I did what all people do who are frightened by beefy looking novels. I looked for the audiobook of it. And I was not let down. I was gripped from start to finish. Following the journey of a man done wrong, who’s simply just trying to do right in this strange journey he finds himself on. One of my new favourites.

God tier!
