About this listen

Maud is an irascible 88-year-old Swedish woman with no family, no friends, and...no qualms about a little murder. This funny, irreverent story collection by Helene Tursten, author of the Irene Huss Investigation series, features two-never-before translated stories that will keep you laughing all the way to the retirement home.

Ever since her darling father's untimely death when she was only 18, Maud has lived in the family's spacious apartment in downtown Gothenburg rent-free, thanks to a minor clause in a hastily negotiated contract. That was how Maud learned that good things can come from tragedy. Now in her late 80s, Maud contents herself with traveling the world and surfing the net from the comfort of her father's ancient armchair. It's a solitary existence, and she likes it that way.

Over the course of her adventures - or misadventures - this little, bold lady will handle a crisis with a local celebrity who has her eyes on Maud's apartment, foil the engagement of her long-ago lover, and dispose of some pesky neighbors. But when the local authorities are called to investigate a dead body found in Maud's apartment, will Maud finally become a suspect?

This was a book club choice, I wouldn’t usually choose such a short book but so glad I did. The stories are quirky and full of dark humour featuring an unexpected protagonist. As the stories progress we learn more about this elderly lady’s life and eventually how the first murder in the book was carried out - a bit like Columbo in reverse. As someone else commented this would work very well on screen.

Excellent short listen, highly recommended

Living in Gothenburg myself I loved the small details in these stories. Nice the narrator put a lot of effort in pronunciation of the Swedish names and her voice suited the main character. Just don’t take tram 4 to Saltholmen, 11 it is. ;)

Adorable psychopathic vigilante

Despite her being a serial killer, Maud is an eminently likeable character and you can't help but want her to literally get away with murder.

The narration is good although my own personal preference would be for an English speaker with a Swedish accent, to really root the book.

Don't mess with Maud

It’s an entertaining read, not intended to develop your intellect or your spirituality, it does make us question however how we view, tend to undermine and even discard seniors. Which is a valuable societal ponder.

I love this dark comedy of a cunning vigilante crone!

Chose this as it was a bookclub title from Jane and Fi’s The Times Off Air programme in UK. Loved it from the get go. Brilliantly narrated. I think I have benefited from listening rather than reading. Giggled throughout despite the darkness of murder and wrong doings. I love Maud. Who doesn’t want to be Maud after listening to her adventures and solutions to problems. I’m not advocating murder but we could all enjoy being just a little bit more Maud.

Perfect Dark (but Pleasant) Humour
