This is a complex reading with many characters, the setting is just after the the First World War. The narrator, Sandra Duncan, captures the era, the variety of theatrical and ‘civilian’ characters and gives each a true personality and character. Sandra Duncan captures all the drama, pathos and empathy in the text making the story telling a true work of art. Thank you Audible

A beautifully written period murder mystery with wonderful characters. Using a real author as the main character is a great original idea . The murder of a young woman who shared a railway journey from Scotland with Josephine Tey, successful playwright and mystery Writer brings her into lives of the cast of her hit play, their lives and secrets and a tragedy dating back twenty years. The mix of real characters and situations with fiction works really well. Narration is superb, easy to listen too and beautifully performed. Highly recommended.

Great period mystery

Loved this detective story set on between the wars theatre land. I’ve read a few of Josephine Tey’s books and it worked well with her a protagonist in this story. The author’s note at the end about the mix of fact and fiction was really interesting. I’ve never heard of the play Richard of Bordeaux - wonder if it would bear a revival? And I truly loved the voice the reader used for Lydia, she seemed to capture exactly the slightly mannered speaking style of actresses from that period (as you see them on film - I’m not that old!). Sorry it’s ended and will go looking for more like this
