Two aviators. Two perspectives. One extraordinary journey.

In An Officer and Her Gentleman, Mandy Hickson, one of the RAF’s first female fast jet pilots, and her husband Craig Hickson, a Royal Navy helicopter pilot and commercial airline captain, share their powerful story of courage, resilience, and love, both in the air and in life.

From combat missions over Iraq to navigating fear, failure, and family, their story reveals what it takes to thrive under pressure. But it’s not just about flying — it’s about overcoming obstacles, embracing difference, and redefining success.

Craig’s journey with dyslexia adds a deeply human layer to their story. Once told he’d “never make it” at school, he proved that determination and curiosity can outfly any limitation. His experience shines a light on learning differently — and leading with empathy.

For listeners who loved Michelle Obama’s Becoming, Lessons in Chemistry, Ant Middleton, or Top Gun: Maverick, this is an uplifting true story about breaking barriers, finding purpose, and believing in yourself — even when the odds are stacked against you.

Perfect for fans of:

  • Inspirational memoirs and leadership stories
  • Women in aviation and armed forces
  • Overcoming failure, fear, or imposter syndrome
  • True stories of love, courage, and resilience
  • Learning differently and embracing neurodiversity

An Officer and Her Gentleman is an absolutely fantastic read. What stood out to me the most was the dual-speaker perspective; hearing Craig’s words by Andrew directly alongside Mandy's brought a brilliant balance to the narrative. As someone recently diagnosed with Inattentive ADHD in my late 30s, and who is naturally introverted, I felt an immense connection to Craig's traits, his personality, and the way he navigated his path. Seeing that kind of representation in a high-pressure field like aviation was incredibly validating.
The structural choice to format the chapter titles around aviation themes was a clever touch that kept the momentum soaring. This isn't just a book about flying; it's a testament to embracing how our minds work differently. Highly recommended!
